Favorite Marshall Memory:
The day in May of 1961 when I got a letter from the U of M letting me know that I had received a $300 scholarship to the U for one year. It made the difference for our family finances enabling me to go to college. I wouldn't have done all the paperwork to apply to the U for the scholarship if it weren't for our HS counselor, Oliver Severson. I owe him a debt of gratitude.

Spouse: Mary
Children:
Tracy, Aaron and Ian (twins)
Grandchildren:
Kelsey, Andrew, Thora, Alex and William
Proud Parents:
Son Aaron is an archeologist and has worked in the Mideast, Greece, Italy, Spain and Morocco: all without a Doctorate degree. He currently works in administration at the U of M. Our son Ian is a lawyer, licensed in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania as well as Oklahoma and Minnesota. Daughter Tracy is intent on providing the world a supply of organic/green produce and fruit in spite of some undeserved notoriety concerning Horses - she is doing well. Granddaughter Kelsey is attending St. Cloud State. Andrew (a 6'2" 9th grader at Braham High School) has no interest in basketball. Thora is 5 years old. Alex is 4 years old and William is 3 years old.
After I graduated from Marshall:
I worked for Honeywell, joined the USMC, came home and attended the U of M on what passed for as the GI Bill.
Occupation(s):
I worked 20 odd years for the MN&S Railway and Yellow Freight Systems in various operations positions. Eventually I started on my own as a contractor providing dock labor for some small trucking companies. Also purchased equipment and contracted with Menard to deliver building materials out of Forest Lake to the east central Minnesota area and western Wisconsin. Sold the business after a number of years and remodeled houses for resale. One day I fell off a ladder and into early retirement.
The places I have lived:
Minneapolis, Duluth, Lakeville, rural Rush City and California. Several military bases. We have been in our current home for 30 years: a beautiful retreat on 45 acres, mostly wood and swamp and set against a 900 acres of aquatic and wildlife management area.
Favorite Marshall Memory:
All of the athletic practices (most of them), EMRA. Having so many classmates and teachers to use as role models. All of the coaches and classmates such as Victor Yu, John Larson and Richard Rose's sister. Darn, what was her name? Must be a senior moment.
Best Moment:
Marrying a gorgeous little Packer backer from Wisconsin and finding 20 years later that was the best thing I did in a lifetime.
Worst Moment:
Our son Ian was attending Seton Hall and occasionally have coffee and a snack at Windows of the World in the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001 he was planning to show a classmate the sights of NYC. He told me on the phone the previous day they would visit the WTC. All day on 9/11 we tried to reach him. Finally that evening I received an email -"I"m OK." That two word email is still in my hard drive.
Favorite Pastimes:
I play in the garden, golf and do wood working. Like nearly everyone, I have a huge bucket list. I may never trek the Hindu Kush or float the Mackenzie river but maybe I will see Montana's great wall formation and visit Minnesota's Snake River Rapids (40 miles away and can't even get to it). Maybe even lower my golf score - naw, never happen.
My favorite place in the whole wide world is:
Coronado Beach in San Diego or Greenstone Trail at Isle National Park.
Fellow Classmates:
I will not be able to attend the reunion: perhaps another time, another place. Hope all of you get to publish that novel, visit that place of your dreams and tell your offspring "I told you so!"

Gould, Gary
Gould, Gary
2651 McCall Avenue
Selma, CA 93662
Spouse: Miriam (Mim) Gould
Update to Gary's biography provided by Miriam Gould on August 18, 2022.
I believe you should have the information on Gary Gould's passing, June 21, 2021. He had battled diabetes for over 30 years,
and lost his battle last year. (No COVID complications!) He was an active pastor in his little congregation in the Madera
Ranchos up until a month before his death.
He had been married to Miriam (Aaland) Gould for 54 years and has 4 children: 2 in California, one in Nampa, Idaho and one in
Beaverton, Oregon, and has 5 beautiful grandchildren, ages ranging from 10-15. His life was filled with blessings, including
playing Tevya, "Fiddler on the Roof" twice, probably leads in 15 other musicals, wrote a musical, "Ben and the Baby", and two
other plays that were all performed in local theater. He and Mim shared a musical career at church that consisted of 2 recorded
albums of which he wrote the songs, and during the summers they performed in churches across the country, besides many times in their
local congregations. He also had written many puppet shows for children and were performed many times at VBS's, Sunday Schools,
and banquets.
His life was one of service to his Lutheran congregations, always loving them and giving them an encouraging word! He served in
San Jose, Ca., Madera Rancho, Ca (2 different times), Tollhouse, Ca., Eaton, Ca., and Selma, Ca., and Madera Rancho, Ca.
The one and only time we were able to come to a Marshall reunion was for his 50th reunion, and he was ever so thankful he got to
visit with his many high school friends.
May the Lord bless your upcoming event! Mim Gould

After I graduated from Marshall:
I attended the University of Minnesota and joined the track team. Feeling
like a small fish in a big pond and forgetting the words I lived by at Marshall
("There is no such word as can't") I joined the the U.S. Army. I served 3 years and
returned home to marry my high school sweethear, Audrey. (FYI, Audrey may have
been one of the rreasons I wanted to quit track once or twice while at Marshall!).
I have four children: Dawn (age 44), Heather (age 42), Amy (37) and John (35).
All played for Coon Rapids High School teams, also the Red and White Cardinals!
My daughter, Amy took after me and was All-State in track and All-Conference in
basketball. All of them have become successful adults and I am very proud of all
of them. I was actively involved with my kids' sports and coached softball, football
and
basketball. During those years, I reflected back on the teachings of Coach Deitz
and his effective method of getting through to kids. Times are now different
than when I was at Marshall. I learned I had to soften the direct approach that worked
so well for Coach Deitz and Coach Sovell. At the age of 57, I retired from Graco
Manufacturing after 30 years. My wife, who retired from Qwest Communications, and I
enjoy traveling with our RV, going to NASCAR races with our family, which now
includes four wonderful grandchildren, who also are natural athletes like Papa.
We spend time at our cabin near Brainerd. I built this cabin and woodworking has
become a second love of my life.
Funny, at one time we were someone else's grandchildren and now we have granchildren.
Life has sped by me and it seems like yesterday that I was running down that
hallway at Marshall High School, unaware of what amazing life experiences
would lie ahead of me. Special thanks to my coaches and teachers for their
support and to my classmates at Marshall for their friendship.
A special not to the Cheerleaders out there......Thanks for coming to the State
Track Meet, it meant a lot to me and hope to be able to say "Thank You"
personally at the Reunion.
Occupation(s):
City of Minneapolis, Retired from Graco
The places I have lived:
Minneapolis, Coon Rapids
Favorite Marshall Memory:
Getting the Mark Hamilton Award for Best Athlete and Mr. Deitz and Mr. Sovell, not only were they great coaches but they were my mentors. They had a never give up attitude which I continued to apply throughout my life. I often tell my children that I would have never finished high school were it not for these two important influences in my life. That may be why I have always pushed my kids harder on academics. Don't get my wrong, I did push athletics onto them as well.
Favorite pastimes:
Building our Cabin. Traveling to NASCAR races, RV camping with my wife and family. Spending time with the kids and grandchildren at the cabin or watching their sports events.
My favorite place in the whole wide world is:
Florida and Arizona (or anywhere there is a NASCAR Race/Track).
Someday I hope to:
See the grandkids graduate from college.
Update to my Bio: John Larson, 2015
My grandson, John Michael Larson, has made his mark on Minnesota Sports.
He was recently (2015) selected to the Minnesota Vikings All State
Football team and came in third for Mr. Football for the State of
Minnesota.
He is one of 30 players to be named and will be recognized during the half-time
show at the Vikings vs Seattle Seahawks game on Sunday December 6, 2015.
He just committed to UMD Duluth. Five years full ride: one year academic
and four athletic. He is also looking at ROTC. Will be playing QB. Wants
to be a chemical or mechanical engineer. Had and amazing four years
in HS at football and basketball. Will be playing in the east-west
all star game in Jacksonville, Florida in January.

Corner Wrinkles Parked Car Reflections
1961 - 1968 I went to Smith College for 2 years, got married, moved to California, got annulled
(turns out he was still married to wife #1. Wife #3 paid for the annulment. 1966 I gave up a
daughter for adoption (how the world has changed since then).
1968 Graduated Summa from University of Minnesota (and very proud of it, needless to say!)
in Anthropology. Had a year + of grad school but it just didn't take.
1970 Left grad school for Europe. Met a guy there, moved back to California.
1971 On my own again (perhaps romance that begins with borrowed cigarettes are doomed
to failure?) The usual dating. One lover gave me a camera which changed my life.
1973 A friend got sick; I took her place at work; boss and I fell in love...lived together
for 10 years.
1976 Career change: took CPA exam and passed 3 of 4 parts; enough to get a good
bookkeeping job.
1977 Started buying real estate, fixing it up and re-selling. Lots of fun and some profit.
1983 Sold last office building, split with the 10 year lover. Diverging priorities and ethics
to blame.
1983 - 1990 Basically retired from working, trying to make a living as a photographer.
Reasonable success but not enough to live on.
1988 IRS and CA noticed I hadn't filed taxes for 12 years and started chasing me. Found
a great tax lawyer and negotiated a payoff which took all my money but still was less than I
owed.
1989 Now out of money, started back to work as a freelance bookkeeper. Have been doing
that since, building my practice.
1989 - 2003 Same Old, same old for several years: business increased, series of interesting
but short term relationships, getting better and better at photography, becoming part of an
arts community. Between 1986 and 1996 went to France to see the painted caves, went to New York
with my singing group, went to Nepal on the Everest trek. So I have been inside the cave of
Lascaux, sung at Carnegie Hall, graduated summa cum laude and seen Everest from base camp.
I've had a truly wonderful life and the capper is: in 2003 the daughter I gave up for adoption
in 1966 found me and we have been best friends ever since. Truly a miracle. We are one
personality in two difference bodies: and it's fabulous.
2004-2011 I moved into an adult mobile home park in Novato, bought 100 acres and a house
in New Mexico, near Taos, absolutely gorgeous high desert. Bought another mobile home on
Mendocino coast, so now I'm Trailer Trash Times Two. Have a Trailer Trash Party every year
around my birthday.
Needless to say, I've laughed all the way. I love my life, no regrets, love to travel,
speak adequate French, passable Italian and learning Spanish. Considering Greek next.
And PS, the reason I can't come to Reunion is that I had already made plans to go to Burning
Man, which is at the same time.
Love reading the reunion book and hope to hear from you all and/or see you at the 55th!

After I graduated from Marshall:
In September 1961 I joined the Marine Corps and after graduating from Boot Camp I was sent to Telecommunications School which I have been able to use the rest of my life in work related items after getting out of the Marine Corps. In 1963 I was sent to Viet Nam and spent the next 17 months there providing Telecommunications for the Marine Corps and the Company I was stationed with while there. After the service, I got married, had one child and then got divorced after 20 years of marriage.
Occupation(s):
Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association based out of Chicago. I spent the next 20 years working for this company while providing telecommunications support. Next, a company called Marsh & McLennar, Inc. I have been able to travel around the world to many different countries and here in the US to many of the large cities installing Telecommunications systems. From 1967 to September 11, 2001 I spent almost 42 weeks a year traveling to different cities and into New York City. In fact, on September 11, 2001 I was supposed to be in NYC at the World Trade Center on the 95th floor for work. I became sick and was unable to travel to New York for the meeting on September 11. Our company lost over 300 people in the disaster. A lot of these people were close friends of mine. If anything good happened out of this disaster was that if it had happened 30 minutes later, the normal starting time for our people to be at work, my company would have lost over 1,000 people.
Occupation:
Vice-President Telecommunications North America from September 11, 2001 to current work from home as I am no longer required to travel.
The places I have lived:
Basically, I have only lived in two different locations in my life. With my parents in St. Anthony Village prior to my joining the Marine Corps and here in Chicago at five different location after I got out of the Marine Corps. For the past 11 years my daughter and grandchildren live with me in our current location.
Favorite Marshall Memory:
The outing at Forest Lake after our High School dinner: feeling sorry for the many people who had to walk from the lake back to the city.
Favorite pastimes:
Used to be playing golf and fishing but now it is mainly spending time with the family.
My favorite place in the whole wide world is:
As I have told you in my above history, I have traveled all over the world and it was always good to get back to my home in Chicago. Therefore, my home was and still is my favorite place in the world. Second would be to live in Hawaii.
Someday I hope to:
At this point as I am still working, I would hope to retire.

After I graduated from Marshall:
Carleton College, BA in 1965, University of Minnesota Medical School, MD in 1970, Internal Medicine, University of Colorado and Stanford in 1974, Infectious Diseases at Stanford in 1977. My most satisfying experience is the mentoring of 50 students (high school, college, and medical students, physicians-in-training). Many of them now carry the title of chief or chairman.
My experiencs at Marshall High School:
The most influential teachers were George Keprios and Helen Chapman. Because of Mr. Keprios, I majored in mathematics in college. The most valuable extracurricular activity was Editor of the Cardinal Yearbook. I learned how to organize a large project, recruit motivated and talented individuals, and delegate responsibility. In my junior year, the Washburn basketball team crushed us by 20 points. In my senior year, I entered the game as a sub and scored the last 3 points that Marshall scored in overtime to eke out a victory. Sadly, those were the only points I scored in my senior year but, at least we beat Washburn.
My Interests:
Vegetable gardening, tennis, chess.
My favorite travel destinations:
Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Iguazu Waterfalls, Argentina/Brazil, Nine tibetan Villages, China. In the U.S. Yosemite, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park. My vacation highlight was a ten day trip rafting through the Grand Canyon with my wife and daughter.
Future:
I don't plan to retire. I hope I will be productive until the day that I die, which may be sooner than later becauses of the stresses in my life. 80 hour work weeks have been my life. Someday I will write my memoirs because I have had a fascinating career with one devastating setback. But as the Chinese philosophers have preached, life is Yin and Yang and setbacks are often the prelude to more favorable events. I am either on the upswing now or I am heading for a fall that I haven't foreseen (I hope it's not the latter).
